Air Niugini Flight B737 recently missed their landing at Chuuk International Airport in Micronesia. Among these were Filipinos who were able to take a video during the rescue. The flight had 36 passengers and 11 crew which is a total of 47. According to the initial report, all 47 were safely rescued from the incident.
A day later, they confirmed that one passenger was missing. The divers found the body of the missing passenger. The only information they gave out to the public was that he was Indonesian and nothing more.
According to reports, the plane was flying too high when they reached the runway. They were already halfway when the plane was able to reach the ground. By that time it was already impossible for them to stop within the runway. This caused them to land on water instead.
Air Niugini Chief Executive Tahawar Durrani said regarding the found body:
Our outreach team is in touch with the man’s family and we are making arrangements to repatriate his body.”
Four other passengers are now in stable condition at Chuuk Island Hospital. They will soon be transferred to Guam for further treatment.
According to Air Niugini, they have been operating since 1973. Data from Aviation Safety Network indicated that the Indonesian passenger was their first casualty in two decades.
One of the passengers, Bill Jaynes, said that the plane came low:
I thought we landed hard. Until I looked over and saw a hole in the side of the plane and water was coming in. And I thought, well, this is not the way it’s supposed to happen.”
The airline and the respective authorities are yet to investigate all possible reasons that may have caused the incident. For now, we can only pray for the Indonesian passenger and be thankful that the other passengers were safe.
